Tech Transfer Virtual Exhibit

  IMEL/NCSR Demokritos

The Institute of Microelectronics (IMEL) is one of the 8 Institutes of the National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) “Demokritos”. It started its activities in 1985 and it is today established as the National Center of Excellence in Micro- and Nanotechnologies, Nanoelectronics and Systems, with full capability in silicon processing and in micro and nanofabrication, characterization and testing, as well as in design, modeling and simulation of materials, structures devices circuits and systems. The developed expertise, know-how and infrastructure at IMEL, place it as a highly competitive institution at European level. Its role for the country is also unique in promoting high technology development in the field of Micro and Nanotechnologies, the transfer of technology and know-how to the industry and the development of human potential in the above fields.
IMEL’s main objectives are:
• Long-term research. Development of fundamental knowledge
• Development of novel technologies, processes and high added-value technology products
• Development of human potential through educational and training activities
• Services in advanced technologies and transfer of technology to the industry
State-of-the art facilities and equipment are available at IMEL. Its 500 m2 clean room area has been fully refurbished in the year 2001 and it houses a fully equipped silicon processing line, comprising thermal and chemical processing, ion implantation, optical and electron beam lithography, chemical and reactive ion etchers, equipment for deposition of metals, polysilicon, nanostructured semiconductors and dielectrics. Besides fabrication facilities, IMEL houses design, testing, characterization, modeling and packaging laboratories.
