ORC conducts research and development of novel epitaxial compound semiconductor heterostructures using MBE for crystal growth. With its six molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) reactors, ORC ranks the biggest university-based centre of fabrication of epitaxial III-V semiconductors in Europe by the MBE technology. It also possesses complete facilities to process and characterize optoelectronic devices.
Device development is focused on light emitting and modulation devices, and ultra-short-pulse high-power fibre lasers. Most recent studies are concerned with high-power vertical external cavity surface emitting lasers (or VECSELs) for high-power applications, and development of UV nanoimprint lithography (UV-NIL) for fabricating sub-100 nm semiconductor nanostructures cost-effectively for nanophotonic components.
ORC promotes co-operation between enterprises and universities, forwards the establishment of new business, participates in national and international initiatives, and facilitates both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The companies directly or indirectly spun-off from ORC manufacture or exploit diode lasers and fibre lasers.
